OTHER SOCIAL SKILLS MATERIAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

7) "SOCIAL SKILLS FOR SPECIAL KIDS" available through SUper Duper.  "It has sections on classroom behavior, interpersonal skills, and ? can't remember last section. Depending on the age/level of your child, it's a good starting point".

8) SKILLSTREAMING  THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILD and SKILLSTREAMING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD by Ellen McGinnis & Arnold P. Goldstein.

One parent - "Helpful books"

Another parent - "These are social skills curricula that can be used in
the classroom.  However, I find their exercises are very
auditory/verbally oriented, which is not that helpful.  I thought I
could use the topics/scenarios as a curriculum at home".

9) READY-TO-USE SOCIAL SKILLS LESSONS & ACTIVITIES FOR GRADES PREK-K AND FOR GRADES 1-3 by Ruth Weltmann Begun (Editor).

"Again, I thought I could use their exercises as a starting curriculum".

10) 'TEACHING AUTISTIC KIDS TO MINDREAD' by Baron Cohen

No comments made to describe this suggestion.

11)   125 WAYS TO BE A GOOD STUDENT

No comments made to describe this suggestion.

12)   HOW TO TEACH PEOPLE WITH AUTISM TO MIND-READ, by Patricia Howlin, Simon Baron-Cohen and Julie Hadwin

"This is a book on theory of mind, with practical drills outlined on how
to work on emotions, perspective-taking and understanding what others
know and don't know and why.  We've found it very useful, and even used
the pictures from the book (made copies, glued on cards) in ABA drills.
It has a sequence of gradually more difficult forms of drills which seem
well-thought-out, so wherever the child is in this sequence, the book
can be useful."

13)  HELP ME BE GOOD BOOKS, BY GROLIER BOOKS, author is Berry

Bennetta's Note: This series was recommended previously on the ME-LIST,
but it was also previously suggested in a very detailed ME-LIST post by
another parent(
SusnWhite@AOL.COM), that the  SOCIAL SKILLS ACTIVITIES FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN - Book by Darlene Mannix "covers all of the Help Me Be Good Books and more".

"This is a series of kids' books, designed to explain to kids what good
behavior is and WHY.  The why is critical, because the books talk a lot
about the expectations and feelings of others, and how the child might
feel in different situations, too.  They are appealing, with animated,
amusing illustrations, succinct, kid-oriented language, and approachable
characters.  Told in a lot of ways like social stories.  I bought them
when Zane turned 6, and this seemed like good timing for us, but
depending on receptive language, they might be useful for some kids at 4
or 5, and certainly will be used until age 7 or 8 at least.

One thing is that this is a series of books, which you buy from Grolier,
so it's kind of a big investment.  Here's how it works:  you get 4 books
in the first shipment, and can cancel the whole thing or send any one or
more books back to get your money back, then you get a second shipment of something like 25 more books.  Again, you can pick and choose topics if you want and only keep some.  You can also pay for them just a few dollars a month if you want. The Sumlins highly recommended these books, and I am glad I invested in them.  We read them at bedtime. Here are some sample topics:  Being Rude, Throwing Tantrums, Interrupting, Complaining, Breaking promises, Being careless, Being greedy, Being mean, Cheating, Being bullied (lots more of course)".

14) CAROL GREY'S SOCIAL STORIES VIDEO CASSETTE (sold via future horizons for about $50)

"I was told it is an absolute bargain investment.  I heard that it would
even benefit my 3.6 yr old.
